When I converted the original photo to B&W I tried to convey the sense of light that was all around that hiking afternoon, this is why there is little tonal range within the photo.

@Observing: Interesting. I appreciate very much (really) this criticism... because you get a lot out of criticisms to improve your shooting. In this case, I'd agree with you if this was meant as a lone photography, but I see it as part of a larger series on mountain b&w pictures, some of which I've posted here. Most do not include any significant foreground, and this picture is meant to be some sort of (failed?) attempt to counterbalance the other pictures. I also plan to include a few closeups of rocks to cover the full spectrum...
